THE
SCOURGE
OF
CHILD LABOUR IN INDIAcontd..
Bandhua Mukti
Morcha since its inception in 1981 has been fighting a
relentless struggle against the inhuman practice of bonded and
child labour. In its long march, it has covered a number of milestones
towards its goal for amelioration of this poor lot. It has
been able to get about 24,000 children released by direct method,
organising raids at the working places and through Courts including
Supreme Court. It is just a bit of the iceberg.
Still
much has to be done.
In this direction
Bandhua Mukti Morcha has been persistently demanding from the
Government through memorandum and rallies as under:
- Free and compulsory elementary
education for all children between the age of six and fourteen
as mandated in the Constitution.
- There should be some economic
incentives in the form of supply of 1 kg of rice and wheat for
every day of schooling for these children. This will provide
food security to these families who are obviously living below
the poverty line.
- Withdrawal of children from work
force and induction of unemployed adults in their places.
- Introduction of National Minimum
Wage in the country equivalent to the first day of salary of
a new class IV entrant in Government service. Its revision should
be done as it is done for the Govt. employees on the basis of
cost price index. The State Govt. may fix minimum wage according
to their requirements. But it should not be below the National
Minimum Wage.
- The entire electronic mass media
and print media should be galvanised to create high degree of
awareness and a sense of urgency towards elimination of all
forms of child labour from the soil of India.
Bandhua Mukti
Morcha has undertaken awareness marches in the states of U.P.,
Karnataka and Maharashtra.
This measure has created a good impact on people relating to the
prevailing child labour system. Besides, it has sensitized the
local administration on this critical issue.
Further, BMM has
recently set up a Transitory Training Camp for ex-bonded and child
labour in Faridabad so as to train them in various skills enabling
them to become self reliant and independent in their ventures.
Equal focus is given on their education and cultural development.
This venture is the first of its kind in India.
