STOP HOUNDING THE PRINCIPAL OF ST. STEPHEN’S COLLEGE

PRESS STATEMENT

STOP HOUNDING THE PRINCIPAL OF ST. STEPHEN’S COLLEGE

I am appalled at the crude and barbaric spectacle of certain former students of St. Stephen’s College hounding a man of proven integrity and stature like the present Principal of St. Stephen’s College.  This witch-hunt began, as I remember, in 2007 when he announced the admission policy, affirming social justice in higher education. Rather than laud him for this bold and visionary step, he began to be hounded by various interest groups. All sorts of charges were brought against him. While I am not familiar with all the details, I have to say that I cannot but admire the courage and fortitude Rev. Thampu has shown over such a long period of privation, which could easily have broken down most others. This, in itself, proves the stature and character of the man.

It is silly that issues long since settled by the High Court -like the validity of his degree or his meeting the eligibility requirements- are being raised every now and then in order to prejudice the public against the Principal.  Seven years of orchestrated campaign has not worked because Rev. Thampu has a well-established image and reputation country-wide. The more this campaign of vilification continues, more and more people country-wise admire him, as I know from my interactions with the people far and near.

Rev. Thampu and I have worked together for a decade and a half and I have to say I have not come across many others who can match his idealism and integrity. St. Stephen’s College is fortunate to have him as its Principal. During his tenure, as the Supreme Councils stated recently, the college has made significant progress.
The children of this country are the beneficiaries. I call upon all concerned to stop this barbaric witch-hunt and to leave St. Stephen’s unharassed to pursue the great service it has been doing these many decades.
